Since around 2019. To be honest, I thought there was more of a difference between these earlier phpBB3 builds and the more modern ones.

under the hood there is a whole world of difference. there are thousands of code changes/updates .

That is not surprising in the slightest. There's a reason we now talk of extensions and not MODs for example.

When I decided to change my username on phpBB.com, Kailey seemed disappointed that I wasn't keeping my old posts by just having the name changed.

I'm surprised they allowed you to come back. I thought a ban on phpBB was a permanent dis-invitation from the site. In fact, being banned is what I am afraid of.
